EVENTS & WORKSHOPS
LIST OF AUTUMN/WINTER COURSES 2011
Venue -
Old Schoolhouse Kinnegad Co. Westmeath
Date - Sept Sat 10th & Sun11th
Medium - Watercolour
Fee - 2 Day Course 120euro
Theme - Flowers in watercolour
Flowers glow in strong summer sunshine so intensely that they seem to radiate an inner light.
Using the unique qualities of watercolour we will aim to capture this glowing light on two very different flower subjects.
White anemones in autumn sunshine contain subtle colours which cause the whites to shimmer against the background shades. The strong vibrant palette of reds and purples of fuchsia flowers will provide a contrasting subject for our second demo.
The course will have instruction on:
Simplifying the drawing and arranging the major shapes to achieve a striking composition.
Ways of mixing delicate colours that are present in flowers.
Techniques to capture the glowing light that radiates from the flowers by carefully observing the tones and colours in the background areas.
Techniques for painting the subtle edges that create the softness of flowers and petals.
Date - Oct Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd
Medium - Oils/Acrylics
Fee -2 Day Course 120euro
Theme - Autumn subjects
The vibrant colours of autumn leaves, fruits and berries provide wonderfully interesting subject matter for the painter.
The colourful autumn hedgerows hold endless subjects. We will select a section of berries and leaves to inspire our first demonstration. An old apple tree beside my studio is transformed in autumn, as the colours warm to ochres, yellow-greens and reds.
For this demonstration we will paint a detail where the branches of the tree are seen against a section of the white weathered wall and studio window.
This course includes instruction on creating areas of depth in the shadows between leaves, fruits and berries. How to identify and paint the essential characteristics of particular fruits and berries. Painting techniques to capture drifts of leaves picking out the essential details. We will also cover techniques for painting reflections in the glass of the window.
We will pay careful attention to the subtly of colour in both subjects to convey the feeling of late summer/early autumn.
Two 12 x16 Canvases/Boards
Date - Nov Sat 12th & Sun 13th
Medium - Oils/Acrylics
Fee - 2 Day Course - 120euro
Theme: - A Coastal Path - colour repetition to create unity
As you stroll through overgrown almost hidden paths in Connemara the most fascinating subjects can suddenly present themselves. The main subject I have in mind for this course is out on Mweenish Island.
The foreground path through the rocks and wild flowers directs the eye to the emerald sea; which is composed of various subtle shades and tones reflecting both the influence of the sky and coral sands underneath in the shallow water, contrasted with rich dark blue-green and purples where the water is deeper.
This course will have instruction on painting rocks, water and grasses. We will particularly emphasis colour unity and balance as we find echoes of the subtle shades from the pink rocks, water and sky. To further explore the role of colour in painting we will judiciously introduce some discordant colours to add spice to the green-pink harmony in the colour world of this painting.
Our second beach subject is painted in very bright sunlight using sharper tonal contrasts to capture the mood of the scene. We will also employ a similar technique of colour repetition to create unity and balance in the painting.

Architectural Students
Design Students
Portfolio Preparation Students
The weekend course will focus on painting and drawing both from direct observation where possible and photographs.
Students can work in a range of water based media or drawing media - watercolours, acrylics and gouache.
I will demonstrate a range of watercolour techniques that are helpful when painting architectural subjects, including brickwork, stonework, visually interesting doorways, windows and other architectural details.
The aim of the course is to explore visual possibilities of architectural subjects using light, shade and texture.
This course will have instruction on both accurate interpretation of the subjects and capturing the more artistically interesting possibilities of light and shade on buildings.
We will also cover:-
The basics of perspective - single point, double point and multipoint perspective.
Ways of rendering a range of textures - brickwork, stonework, glass and weathered wood.
The use of water based media on paper including watercolour techniques - line and wash.
Courses are only suitable for people who have some previous experience of painting.
It is important to bring a basic set of acrylics (3 Primary - Red, Blue, Yellow also White & Burnt Sienna, 1 Flat Brush No. 6 or 8) as well as your standard oil painting materials on all the courses.
For many of the courses you will need to have at least two palette knives - one medium size and one small knife. These should have a very flexible blade.
It is also very important to use only white spirits or Sansodor Solvent When painting in oils as this reduces the smell in the room making the atmosphere more pleasant for everyone.

place on any course.
